EMT-B 12-Lead EKG Study

Conducted by Ross County, Ohio, EMS Medical Director

Background
During the one-year study period ending July 1, 2006, there were 89 12-lead EKG's obtained and transmitted by 55 EMT Basics located across 5 Townships in Ohio. This included 5 STEMI's detected in the field. In each case, the EMT Basics applied the CardioQuick Patch to conduct the 12-lead EKG.

Summary
There was a 97.4% accuracy rate when applying the precordial leads using the CardioQuick Patch, and 95.6% of the EKG's were of readable diagnostic quality. In addition, there was a 68.4 minute "door-to-balloon" time for the STEMI patients using the CardioQuick Patch versus a 99 minute time for non-study patients using single electrodes.

Conclusion
EMT-B personel can be educated in a four hour class to accurately, safely apply and transmit 12-Lead EKG's from the field, thus considerably decreasing "door-to-balloon" time for STEMI patients.
